All adults who are physically active or play sports should be screened for HCM.

According to the American Heart Association, it's estimated that 1 in every 500 people have HCM, but a large percentage of patients are undiagnosed.

Many people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy have no symptoms. For those that do experience symptoms, some of the most common can include:

  • chest pain
  • fatigue
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • shortness of breath
  • dizziness
  • fainting

Whether you have a family history of heart complications or you simply want to take a proactive approach to your health, St. Luke's can help. We offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to screening, diagnosing and treating HCM and other heart conditions, for patients of all ages, throughout the St. Louis region.

Common Questions

Got a question? We’re here to help.
  • What is Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy?

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is the leading cause of heart-related sudden death in people under the age of 35.

In short, Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a condition where the myocardium (heart muscle) becomes enlarged, which makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood efficiently.

    Read more about it here.

  • What are the risk factors and screening options?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is most often inherited. HCM is the most common form of genetic heart disease. It can happen at any age, but most receive a diagnosis in middle age.

The first step is typically to have an electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiogram (echo) to check your heart.

As always, your doctor can discuss your personal risk and appropriate preventive treatments to reduce your risk.

More information on risk factors and screening options can be found here.

  • What insurance do you accept?

St. Luke's accepts most major HMOs and PPOs.

If you are covered by an HMO, a PPO or another type of managed care insurance plan, your plan may have special requirements, such as pre-certification or pre-authorization for certain procedures. Each healthcare plan has its own set of rules, participating physicians and hospitals, radiology centers and laboratories.
